A mass shooting at the Westminster Apartments in West Amarillo left two people dead and eight others injured early Sunday morning, according to Amarillo police. The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. at 2415 Coulter Street near Westgate Parkway, where officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire and arrived to find numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Authorities identified one of the victims killed as Ezekiel Rudy Almazan. Police confirmed that one individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim later died after being transported to a local hospital. Early reports indicated that nine individuals were taken to area hospitals, with at least five listed in critical condition during the initial response.
Preliminary findings from the Amarillo Police Department revealed that the violence stemmed from an earlier gathering involving juveniles and young adults. Investigators said the group had been attending a party at a different location before relocating to the Westminster Apartments. Several individuals who had been asked to leave the original gathering later followed others to the apartment complex.
Police reported that those individuals attempted to force entry into an apartment unit and opened fire using what was described as a rifle‑style weapon. Cartridge casings recovered in the alley south of the complex suggested that multiple weapons were used. A Glock 9mm handgun was located on a landing outside Apartment 244, though no weapons were recovered directly from suspects.
Residents in the surrounding area described the gunfire as intense and prolonged, with one witness reporting being awakened by what sounded like machine‑gun fire followed by dozens more shots. Police have not yet released information regarding suspects or arrests, but investigators believe two suspects were involved and that the attack may have been targeted.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses. Authorities have urged residents in the Belmar community to check doorbell cameras or residential surveillance for unusual activity during the early morning hours of the shooting. Additional updates are expected as police work to identify those responsible.
