On December 3, 2025, the Park Forest, Illinois community said farewell to Detective Tim Jones, who passed away at home surrounded by his family at the age of 34.
Detective Jones’s nearly decade-long journey of resilience and courage began on March 19, 2016, when he was critically wounded in a line-of-duty shooting that left him paralyzed. His strength in the years that followed became an enduring symbol of hope and perseverance.
A Tinley Park native, Tim graduated from Victor J. Andrew High School and fulfilled a lifelong dream by joining the Park Forest Police Department in 2015. Early on the morning of March 19, 2016, as a 24-year-old rookie officer, he responded to a call of a break-in and stolen vehicle.
While helping to apprehend the suspect, Tim was shot three times, sustaining severe injuries to his head and neck. Airlifted to Christ Hospital, he was placed in a medically induced coma with slim chances of survival.
Against all odds, Tim emerged from the coma and began a grueling recovery that included multiple surgeries and more than a year of rehabilitation. His determination inspired his department and community. In May 2017, he was discharged from Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in full uniform to a standing ovation. In March 2021, he was honorarily promoted to detective, and his badge number, 204, became a local emblem of strength and resilience.
Throughout his recovery, Tim remained deeply connected to his family, who provided unwavering support. He found joy in adaptive hobbies like fishing and listening to classic rock and continued to give back by mentoring youth remotely. His legacy of perseverance was celebrated through the #TimStrong movement, which united the south suburbs in support.
Tim’s passing is met with profound grief, but his legacy endures through the lives he touched, the officers he inspired, and the organ donations he made that will aid 75 recipients. Funeral arrangements will be shared by his family in the coming days.
