It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Stephen Lewis. The renowned Canadian politician, diplomat, and lifelong humanitarian advocate left this world on March 31, 2026, at the age of 88, after an eight-year battle with stomach cancer.
His peaceful passing in hospice care in Toronto has sent waves of sorrow through the global humanitarian community, the Stephen Lewis Foundation he co-founded, and countless individuals whose lives were touched by his tireless work for justice and dignity.
For decades, Stephen stood as a powerful voice against inequality, particularly the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, and his departure marks the end of an extraordinary chapter defined by eloquence, moral clarity, and unwavering action.
Stephen’s journey began as a prominent Canadian politician and diplomat, serving as leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party and later as Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations. Yet it was his passionate response to the global AIDS crisis that defined the latter part of his life.
In 2001, he co-founded the Stephen Lewis Foundation with his wife, Janet Solberg, to provide direct support to community-based organizations in Africa caring for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
