In a heartbreaking off-duty accident on January 30, 2020, 32-year-old Cartersville Police Officer Sarah Beth Barnes lost her life when she lost control of her vehicle on Georgia Highway 6 in Paulding County, crossing the median and colliding head-on with an oncoming car.
The Georgia State Patrol investigated the crash, which occurred while Barnes was driving eastbound near Dallas, Georgia. Pronounced dead from injuries sustained, her passing marked a profound loss for the department she served with distinction for two years.
A U.S. Navy veteran who joined the Naval Reserves in 2015, Barnes transitioned to law enforcement inspired by personal tragedy, previously serving with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. Her role as a school resource officer at Cartersville Primary and Elementary schools highlighted her commitment to community safety and youth engagement.
As a mother of five children—Alexis, Grace, Hayleigh, Skylar, and Braden—Barnes poured her energy into providing a nurturing home, taking additional jobs to ensure their well-being. Married to Steve Barnes, who worked with the Department of Corrections, she balanced demanding shifts with family priorities. Her colorful personality and fun-loving nature made her a beloved figure in both professional and personal circles.
Barnes began her path of service as a teenage lifeguard, foreshadowing a life dedicated to helping others. Cartersville honored Barnes with visitation at Owen Funeral Home followed by a celebration of life at Sam Jones United Methodist Church on February 3, 2020. Memorial donations supported Tunnel to Towers, reflecting her legacy of service that continues to inspire the community she protected.
