Robert Kenneth Irving, known as Robert K. Irving, of Moncton, New Brunswick, passed away on May 19, 2026, at the age of 71 after a courageous battle with cancer. His death has sent shockwaves through the business community across New Brunswick and Canada, marking the end of a significant chapter for one of the country’s most influential family-owned enterprises.
Robert made his home in Moncton, where he lived with his family and remained deeply involved in the province’s economic and community life. Born on December 3, 1954, in Saint John, he was a proud graduate of Acadia University. He dedicated his career to the family business, helping guide its growth and diversification across multiple sectors while maintaining strong ties to Atlantic Canada.
As co-CEO of J.D. Irving, Limited alongside his brother Jim, Robert played a central role in overseeing a vast portfolio that included forestry, shipbuilding, transportation, agriculture, retail, and manufacturing. He also served as president of Irving Tissue and Cavendish Farms.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Robert was a respected philanthropist and community leader. He received the Order of New Brunswick in 2024 in recognition of his extensive contributions to the province. He was also known for his passionate ownership of the Moncton Wildcats hockey team, where he invested significantly in minor hockey and community programs.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jill, their four children Megan, Meredith, Olivia, and R.J., and four grandchildren. The family has noted that he passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.
