On December 13, 2025, MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, only 18 years old and in his first year at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, lost his life in a tragic campus shooting during a study session in the Barus and Holley engineering building.
Born in Uzbekistan and raised in Midlothian, Virginia, after immigrating with his family in 2011, he carried a warm, outgoing personality that drew people to him. His gentle nature and compassion left a lasting impression on classmates, friends, and loved ones. The Brown community, together with Providence at large, grieves the sudden loss of a young man whose future promised both achievement and kindness.
At Brown, MukhammadAziz pursued biochemistry and neuroscience, motivated by both intellectual curiosity and personal experience. Having undergone brain surgery at age 10 and later treatment for scoliosis, he was determined to become a neurosurgeon, channeling his resilience into a career dedicated to healing others. His choice of Brown was also shaped by the university’s financial aid, which eased the burden on his parents and allowed him to follow his ambitions.
Within his family, he was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend. As the middle child among siblings Rukhsora and Samira, he cherished his role in family life, looking forward to returning home for winter break to spend time with his young niece and strengthen the bonds that remained central to his identity even as he began his new chapter in Rhode Island.
The shooting, which claimed two lives including his and injured nine others, shocked the campus community during finals week. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances, while heightened security and cancellations underscored the gravity of the tragedy. Tributes poured in, including from the U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, recognizing the promise of a life cut short.
In response, his sister Samira organized a fundraiser to support the family and direct surplus funds to charity in his name, a gesture that reflects the widespread respect for his generous spirit. Funeral arrangements remain private as the family prepares for an Islamic burial, focusing on honoring his scholarly dedication and compassionate influence.
MukhammadAziz’s life, though brief, was marked by resilience, intellectual pursuit, and deep devotion to family. His legacy continues through the inspiration he offered to siblings, friends, and the Uzbek American community, remembered for his humility, helpfulness, and dreams of serving humanity through medicine.
