On February 22, 2026, a cherished resident of Columbus passed away unexpectedly. Mickey Mitchell Sr., age 69, left behind a large and loving family along with many friends who will forever remember his warmth and larger-than-life personality. Born on October 28, 1956 in Columbus to the late Toy and Winifred Mitchell, he was a proud lifelong resident of the city who touched countless lives through his genuine kindness and easy smile.
Mickey was a devoted father to his children Angela Phipps, Andrea Mitchell, Amber (Todd) Martin, Mickey Mitchell Jr., and Heather Mitchell, as well as bonus children Charlie and Teahia. He shared his life with his longtime companion Theresa and took immense pride in his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was the heart of his world, and he poured love, guidance, and support into every relationship with quiet strength and unwavering loyalty.
Known as the greatest storyteller in the world, Mickey had a special gift for making people laugh and feel welcome. He never met a stranger and had a way of brightening any room with his humor and kind heart. He enjoyed simple pleasures like going on walks, drinking Pepsi, eating Reese’s Cups and Ruffles, playing the lottery, and passionately cheering for the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Bengals.
Beyond his family, Mickey’s approachable nature and genuine kindness left a positive mark on the broader Columbus community. Friends and acquaintances admired how easily he connected with people and the consistent warmth he showed to everyone around him, making him someone people genuinely enjoyed being around and relied on for a good laugh or encouraging word.
The unexpected loss has brought deep sorrow to all who knew and loved Mickey, but it has also united many in sharing fond memories of his joyful spirit and generous heart. His family is now leaning on one another and the outpouring of support from the community during this difficult time, with calling hours and a memorial service planned for March 5 at Newcomer Northeast Chapel.
