The community of Leoni Township, Michigan, continues to mourn following the peaceful passing of Mary Louise Taylor, who departed this life on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, at the age of 98. Surrounded by her family, Mary’s final moments reflected the same devotion and love that had defined her nearly century-long journey.
Born on October 27, 1927, to George and Gretchen Tenney, Mary grew up in the rural landscapes of Leoni Township, where the values of responsibility, compassion, and faith were instilled early. Her life spanned eras of immense change—from the challenges of the Great Depression to the growth of post-war Michigan communities—yet she remained steadfast in her commitment to kindness, hard work, and service.
In 1947, Mary married Robert Taylor at the Federated Church of Grass Lake, beginning a partnership that endured for 64 years until his passing in 2011. Together, they built a home rooted in faith, family, and community. Robert’s service as a World War II Navy veteran and his long career at Consumers Energy reflected the same dedication that Mary carried into her own roles as wife, mother, and community servant. Their marriage stood as a testament to enduring love and shared purpose.
Mary’s professional life was marked by her 22 years of service to Grass Lake Community Schools. She began as a bus driver, motivated by concern for children’s safety, and later worked in the high school kitchen until her retirement in 1987. In both roles, she nurtured generations of students, ensuring their well-being with practical care and quiet encouragement. Her contributions left a lasting imprint on the district and the families it served.
Though she endured the loss of her husband, parents, sister, and brothers, Mary carried forward with resilience, finding strength in her children and grandchildren. Her family remained the center of her world, and her influence continues through Milbourne Taylor, William (Sandra) Taylor, Jill Taylor, Matthew (Sharon) Taylor, Judy (Robert) Taylor-Conley, and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the Federated Church of Grass Lake, with Rev. Chuck McNeil officiating. Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sherwood Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Leoni Cemetery.
