On December 13, 2025, Robeson County, North Carolina, witnessed a violent episode when Cheyenne D. Woods, 36, of Red Springs, forcibly commandeered an ambulance at gunpoint while it was en route to a hospital.
Authorities report that Woods, who has a well-documented record of violent crimes, allegedly threatened two emergency medical personnel with a firearm after they responded to his call for assistance on Chavis Road near Maxton. Though the responders managed to escape physically unharmed, they were left deeply shaken as Woods took possession of the vehicle.
Driving the stolen ambulance, Woods soon collided at the junction of Union Chapel Road and Denium Road, situated between Lumberton and Pembroke. The crash involved a car operated by 74-year-old Marie Locklear of Red Springs, whom officials identified as an innocent passerby. Following the collision, Woods is said to have exited the ambulance and fatally shot Locklear at the scene.
Locklear was rushed by emergency teams to a nearby medical facility but succumbed to her wounds shortly thereafter. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office condemned the incident as a senseless act committed by a repeat offender. Records indicate Woods’ criminal history includes prior homicide-related charges dating back to 2008.
Law enforcement apprehended Woods close to the crash site. He now faces a series of charges, among them first-degree murder, armed robbery, unlawful firearm possession as a convicted felon, and assault on emergency workers. He is currently detained without bond at the Robeson County Detention Center. Sheriff Burnis Wilkins emphasized the case as a troubling example of persistent recidivism.
