It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Kelly Marie Astone, 38, of Burlington, Massachusetts, who died peacefully on April 13, 2026. She was a woman whose life, though marked by profound physical challenges, radiated a quiet joy that left a lasting impression on everyone who crossed her path. Her passing has brought both sorrow and gratitude to the community that loved her.
Kelly was born in Waltham to Frank and Rhoda Astone. Early in her childhood, doctors diagnosed her with Rett syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that affects movement, coordination, and communication. She could not speak or use her hands in typical ways. But those who spent time with her learned that her spirit needed no words to be understood.
She grew up in Burlington and remained a resident there her entire life. As a young child and through her early twenties, she attended the LABBB Educational Collaborative in Lexington, a program designed for students with complex needs. Later, she joined the Minuteman Arc day program in Concord, where she spent sixteen years building routines and relationships that gave her days meaning. In recent years, she lived as part of the Edinburg Center group home community, where caregivers treated her like family.
Her family never wavered in their devotion. They advocated for her, adapted to her needs, and made sure she experienced love, dignity, and a sense of belonging at every stage of her life. They learned to read her smiles, her laughter, and her quiet cues. Those small expressions became their language.
Though Rett syndrome took away so much, it never took her ability to connect. Kelly’s presence brought comfort. Her smile could fill a room. Her laughter, though rare, was unmistakably pure. She taught those around her that love does not require conversation and that joy can exist even in a body that cannot move the way it wants to.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home on Winn Street in Burlington. A funeral service will follow on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
Kelly is survived by her parents, Frank and Rhoda Astone, and her extended family. They will carry her memory forward, not with grief for what she could not do, but with gratitude for who she was: a daughter, a friend, and a quiet light in a world that often forgets the beauty of stillness.
