On December 6, 2025, Joshua Fondren Jr., 25, was discovered with multiple gunshot injuries and declared deceased after a fatal shooting at a house located on the 600 block of Jackson Avenue, adjacent to McLaren Street within the Jackson Hill area.
Law enforcement officials indicated the episode may have been connected to a robbery and likely involved individuals who were acquainted. Two additional men, both 25 years old, are hospitalized in critical condition. A four-year-old child sustained a superficial injury and is anticipated to make a complete recovery.
A person of interest was taken into custody on December 7; however, formal charges have not yet been filed as the Muskegon Major Crime Initiative and Michigan State Police aid in examining the collected evidence.

His mother, Deborah Wyrick, recalled him as someone who brought energy to any gathering and remained a faithful companion, whose loss is acutely felt in the close neighborhood where he lived.
Fondren managed the routines of daily life with a notable sense of duty, often choosing to spend time at family events and maintaining ties within his local area. Raised by Wyrick along with siblings, including his sister Karla, he moved through life with a resilience forged by Muskegon’s blue-collar heritage.
The violence has dismayed residents of a generally calm east-side neighborhood, where such incidents are uncommon despite continued efforts to promote safety. On December 8, more than one hundred people attended vigils, releasing red and black balloons in Fondren’s memory and pink and purple ones for Watts, highlighting a collective sorrow. A GoFundMe organized by Wyrick is collecting contributions to assist with funeral expenses, acknowledging the economic hardship the family now faces.
