Leavenworth, Kansas authorities concluded a prolonged standoff on the night of March 12 into early March 13 2026 when 36-year-old Joseph Lee Dickey was found dead inside an apartment in the 700 block of North 13th Terrace near Barnett Avenue just south of the U.S. Penitentiary.
U.S. Marshals and Leavenworth Police Department officers had located the suspect around 1 p.m. Thursday in connection with an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault stemming from a February 14 shooting.
After repeated negotiations and the deployment of tear gas Dickey refused to surrender leading to an hours long operation that ended with his body discovered in the bathroom from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. The scene was cleared around 12:30 a.m. Friday following the resolution in this residential area of Leavenworth.
