The Bronx District Attorney’s Office announced on March 31, 2026 that 27-year-old Isiah Garrett was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder in the death of musician Avanti “Vontae” Frowner. Garrett’s co-defendant 28-year-old Nayshon White pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 29, 2026 to 20 years to life.
The sentencing concluded a four-year legal process that began with the fatal shooting on June 9 2022 at the Amazing Community Pharmacy located at 595 East Tremont Avenue in the Tremont section of the Bronx. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark described the attack as callous and indiscriminate noting that the gunmen put everyone inside the pharmacy and on the street at risk during the robbery.
The sentencing came after Garrett and White were arrested in Georgia on June 22 2022 following a swift investigation by New York and Georgia authorities. Prosecutors presented evidence that Garrett orchestrated the robbery at the pharmacy on East Tremont Avenue while White participated in the assault and shooting.
Both men were extradited to New York where they faced charges related to the murder and robbery of Frowner. The plea agreements brought a measure of closure for Frowner’s family after years of waiting for accountability in the Bronx court system.
On the night of June 9 2022 Frowner a 27-year-old musician originally from Chicago and temporarily residing in Los Angeles was visiting New York for a performance. He stopped at the Amazing Community Pharmacy at 595 East Tremont Avenue to purchase medication when he and a friend were approached in the parking lot by a group of armed men.
The assailants forced Frowner back inside the store where he was beaten and shot multiple times in the torso sustaining a dozen gunshot wounds. Witnesses inside the pharmacy were left traumatized as the attackers also stole two chains and cash before fleeing the scene on East Tremont Avenue.
Frowner was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. The Bronx District Attorney’s Office pursued the case aggressively after the suspects were traced to Georgia highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence at the pharmacy in Tremont.
