On April 26, 2026, Dr. Charles Vonder Embse died after a long illness. He was a physician. He was also a man of deep Catholic faith. Columbus, Ohio, lost someone who spent five decades in examination rooms and pews, treating patients and serving parishioners with the same steady hands.
Charles grew up in Catholic schools. St. Gerard’s. Lima Central Catholic High School. He earned a Knights of Columbus scholarship to the University of Dayton, where he finished his pre-med requirements. Then he went to Des Moines University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. He graduated Magna Cum Laude. That is not easy.
He completed a family medicine internship at Doctor’s North Hospital. Then he practiced for 50 years. Hospital settings. Private practice. He retired in 2018 but stayed on at Cleveland Clinic Columbus locations until 2022. Colleagues say he was thorough and patient. He did not rush appointments. He listened.
His faith was not separate from his work. He belonged to St. Peter’s Church in Columbus for his entire adult life. He served in the Knights of Columbus for decades. Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. Those were not just words on a plaque. He lived them.
He married Sheila. They stayed together for 59 years. They raised two children and welcomed five grandchildren. They traveled. They cruised in the Caribbean. She was his partner in medicine’s long hours and in retirement’s slower pace.
The family has scheduled a visitation for Friday, May 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Smoky Row Road in Columbus. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. The church will fill with patients who remember his kindness, fellow knights who remember his service, and family who remember his laugh.
Dr. Vonder Embse leaves behind his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and a medical community that will measure other doctors against his example. He did not chase awards. He chased healing. That is a different kind of ambition. And he achieved it.
