On December 4, 2025, the academic community at Middle Tennessee State University and the wider Murfreesboro area suffered a profound loss with the tragic death of Dr. Ashleigh E. McKinzie.
The 41-year-old associate professor of sociology and anthropology was found fatally wounded along Smithville Highway in DeKalb County in the early morning hours. She was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot injuries.
Dr. McKinzie earned her PhD in sociology from the University of Georgia in 2017 and joined MTSU that same year. She quickly became a respected scholar and dedicated educator, known for her research on intersectionality, inequality, and social vulnerability—particularly in disaster recovery contexts. Her work was published in several respected journals, and she was admired for blending academic rigor with deep empathy and a commitment to social justice.
Colleagues remember Dr. McKinzie as a collaborative and thoughtful presence in her department, where she contributed to panels on ethnographic methods and mentorship. She taught courses on qualitative research and social theory and was passionate about guiding graduate students, helping them navigate the challenges and rewards of sociological fieldwork.
Outside the classroom, Dr. McKinzie was a devoted wife and mother of two young children. She enjoyed hiking in the Cumberland Plateau and valued time spent with her family. Her personal and professional lives were guided by a belief in the importance of community, resilience, and compassion.
The circumstances of her death remain under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. A 27-year-old man present at the scene is cooperating with authorities, and no charges have been filed at this time.
