Dontavius Marable, 17, of Elberton, Georgia, died on December 9, 2025, following a shooting at the McDonald’s restaurant on Elbert Street where he worked evening shifts. Police responded at 10:19 p.m. and found him collapsed in the lobby with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was transported to Elbert Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite medical efforts.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the incident involved Marable and Justin Cleveland, 15, during an argument connected to a mutual acquaintance. Cleveland allegedly drew a handgun and fired the shots. He surrendered voluntarily the next day, was booked into Wilkes Regional Youth Detention Center, and charged as an adult with malice murder and felony murder.
Dontavius was a lifelong resident of Elberton. He balanced high school responsibilities with part‑time employment, reflecting early steps toward independence. Peers remembered his punctuality and team‑oriented spirit, qualities shaped in a community known for granite quarries and strong family ties.
His family provided the foundation of his life. Supported by parents and siblings, he contributed his earnings to household meals and gatherings, strengthening bonds with extended relatives. Though only 17, he embraced his role as a supportive son and brother.
Outside of work, Dontavius enjoyed sports practices, casual outings with friends, and time spent exploring trails near Richard B. Russell State Park. His hobbies included video games and pickup basketball, simple activities that fostered connection and balance between school, work, and rest.
As of December 11, 2025, funeral arrangements have not been announced. The Elberton McDonald’s franchise pledged support to his coworkers and family, while the GBI continues to seek information from the public. His memory endures in the community as a symbol of youthful dedication and family devotion.
