A Valdosta man, identified as Damani Bentley, was killed in a shooting late Sunday morning at J Boys Travel Center, located at 3661 Madison Highway in Lowndes County, Georgia. Deputies responded at approximately 11:45 a.m. after receiving reports of an active shooter at the business.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Three of the victims were transported to South Georgia Medical Center for emergency treatment, while Bentley was pronounced deceased at the scene due to his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the suspected shooter, Jabari Nelms of Valdosta, was taken into custody without incident. Nelms is being held at the Lowndes County Jail and faces multiple charges, including murder, in connection with the deadly workplace shooting.
Investigators stated that the victims and the suspect were all employees of J Boys Travel Center and were working at the time of the incident. Early findings suggest the shooting stemmed from a workplace conflict, though officials have not yet released details about what may have triggered the violence.
Witnesses described a tense work environment in the food‑service area shortly before the shooting, noting that employees were working in close quarters. Sheriff Ashley Paulk emphasized that investigators are still piecing together the events leading up to the shooting as they interview witnesses and review evidence.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with additional information to contact investigators as the case remains active. Community members have expressed shock and concern as they mourn Bentley and await further updates from authorities.
