Antioch Woman Shanell Smith Killed in Wrong‑Way DUI Crash on I‑680 in Walnut Creek

Shanell Shari Smith, 42, of Antioch, was killed late Friday night, May 1, 2026, when a wrong‑way driver struck six vehicles on Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek, California. Seven others were injured, including the wrong‑way driver, who was later determined to have been impaired and arrested.

California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred at approximately 11:23 p.m. just north of Treat Boulevard. A Dodge Charger was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I‑680 when it collided with six vehicles. Smith, a passenger in one of the northbound cars, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that four people sustained major injuries and three others suffered minor injuries, including the driver of the Charger. The woman behind the wheel was transported to a local hospital for treatment and placed under arrest after investigators determined she was impaired at the time of the crash. Charges are pending.

The collision forced the closure of all northbound lanes of I‑680 until about 3:35 a.m. Saturday, as CHP officers conducted a full investigation and cleared the wreckage. Multiple vehicles were heavily damaged, and traffic was diverted for several hours.

Smith’s family described her as a loving mother and community member. Her daughter, Niyanna Farinacci, created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses, writing that her mother “moved through this world with a smile on her face and her head held high” and had “a rare gift of making all those in her presence feel truly seen and loved.” As of May 5, the fundraiser had raised nearly $9,500 toward its $20,000 goal.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident, reviewing evidence and witness statements to determine the full circumstances of the wrong‑way driver’s actions. Officials emphasized that impaired driving remains a serious threat on Bay Area roadways and urged the public to report suspected intoxicated drivers immediately.
