Officer Andy Chan, a respected 55-year-old Philadelphia Police Highway Patrol officer and beloved resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away on December 2, 2025, nearly seven years after sustaining critical injuries in a line-of-duty motorcycle crash.
Flashback to 2019
The incident occurred on January 3, 2019, in Northeast Philadelphia’s Holmesburg neighborhood, when a 79-year-old driver struck his patrol motorcycle near Pennypack Park on Rhawn Street and Rowland Avenue, ejecting him over 20 feet and causing a severe traumatic brain injury.
Despite intensive medical care, including a prolonged coma and around-the-clock support, Chan succumbed to complications from those injuries, closing a chapter of remarkable resilience and service.
Chan joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 1996 after brief stints with Ocean City Police and the Philadelphia Housing Authority, quickly realizing his childhood dream of serving in the elite Highway Patrol Unit in 2004. Known for his pride in riding motorcycles and greeting colleagues with an enthusiastic “Highway!”, he earned multiple commendations, including the Medal of Excellence renamed in his honor posthumously.
Born and raised in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, where he graduated from Roman Catholic High School in 1989, Chan drew inspiration from officers visiting his parents’ restaurant, fueling his lifelong commitment to law enforcement. His career reflected deep roots in the city’s diverse neighborhoods, blending authority with empathy in high-stakes highway patrols and responses to major incidents like the 2015 Amtrak derailment.
At the center of Chan’s life was his profound devotion to family, sharing a loving marriage with wife Teng and raising three children—Thaisen, Adam, and Adrianna—whom he cherished boundless. He balanced demanding shifts with familial priorities, attending events and offering unwavering support that shaped their lives with affection and guidance. His Chinatown heritage and community ties extended this nurturing spirit to siblings Serena, Alan, Alexander, and Albert, along with many nieces and nephews.
A grand funeral procession and service on December 16, 2025, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul drew hundreds of officers, city leaders, and mourners, featuring his motorcycle in tribute and burial at West Laurel Hill Cemetery. Annual block parties and fundraisers continued honoring his legacy, with proceeds aiding first responder families.
