On a Sunday night in Nashville, Tennessee, a sophomore at Fisk University was killed in what seemed to be a random shooting while returning to campus. Andre Bell, a prominent member of the university’s men’s basketball team and a 20-year-old student seeking a degree in business administration, was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 65 North.
The event took place at approximately 8:08 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2026, in the vicinity of the multi-level interchange with Interstate 40, near Fort Negley and the Adventure Science Center.
Bell was driving a white Nissan Sentra with two other members of the basketball team, according to preliminary information from law officials. After volunteering at a collegiate gymnastics competition at the nearby fairgrounds, they were on their way to the Fisk University campus.
His passengers reported seeing a dark-colored automobile in the left lane next to them as the car continued in the northbound lanes. Both said that they heard many gunshots while momentarily using their cell devices.
Andre Bell was hit in the head by the gunshots. The Nissan then abruptly changed lanes, braked, and swerved before colliding with a red pickup truck. The gunfire came from a black vehicle that kept moving down the freeway and eventually left the scene. Two reports of a gunshot from the region were received by emergency services at the same time.
Andre Bell was transported with utmost urgency to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in what was described as “extremely critical” condition. Despite exhaustive medical intervention, the administration of Fisk University conveyed the sorrowful news on Monday, January 12, that he had died from his wounds. The two other occupants of the vehicle sustained no physical injuries but were severely traumatized as direct witnesses to the homicide.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is conducting an ongoing investigation into the shooting. While initial commentary from officials suggested the possibility of a road rage incident as a catalyst, the MNPD has clarified that a specific motive has not been established.
