An 18-year-old high school senior and football player was killed in a horrific shooting in Girard, Kansas, on the evening of Friday, January 9, 2026. The event happened in Franklin Park, a neighborhood park next to Girard High School, on the 400 block of West St. John Street.
After police reacted to a shooting complaint, Adam Basauri, a young guy who was characterized by his community as intelligent, kind, caring, and having a lovely smile, was discovered at the park with serious bullet wounds. Adam was declared dead at the site even though emergency services responded right away.
The Crawford County Attorney’s Office has charged a 17-year-old boy, identified in court documents and police statements as a childhood friend of Adam’s, with first-degree murder. The suspect’s name has not been officially released by authorities due to his status as a minor.

On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the suspect appeared in court for the first time. The procedures and certain aspects of the evidence may not be completely public since the case involves a minor. The Girard Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office are still looking into the exact events leading up to the deadly confrontation at Franklin Park.
