A fatal early‑morning collision along Interstate 55 has left the Channahon community shaken as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash. The incident occurred in the southbound lanes near mile marker 246, an area that saw heavy emergency response activity as troopers and medical personnel worked urgently to assist those involved.

Illinois State Police reported that troopers were dispatched just before 3:15 a.m. on Sunday after receiving calls about a two‑vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of I‑55. Responders arrived to find both drivers injured, prompting immediate life‑saving efforts under challenging pre‑dawn conditions. The severity of the crash led to a full closure of the interstate for several hours.

The Will County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as 26‑year‑old Melissa Prosser of Bourbonnais, who had been transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Joliet. Despite medical intervention, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Her identity and the timeline of her treatment were confirmed in official coroner and ISP statements.

Authorities confirmed that the crash involved two vehicles, one of which Prosser was driving. The other driver was also transported to a hospital for treatment, though their condition has not been publicly disclosed. ISP noted that both vehicles sustained significant damage, and investigators have not yet determined what led to the collision.

The crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes of I‑55 until approximately 8:40–8:45 a.m., as investigators documented the scene and crews worked to clear debris. The extended closure underscores the severity of the impact and the complexity of the investigation now underway.

As the Illinois State Police continue to examine roadway evidence and interview witnesses, the community mourns the loss of Melissa Prosser.
