On the night of Saturday, January 17, 2026, a domestic dispute in the Metro East region of Illinois escalated into a shooting and a multi-town pursuit that ended with a suicide in Missouri. The incident began just after 11:15 p.m. in the 1700 block of Jamestown Road, a location on the border between the Illinois cities of Belleville and Swansea.
Belleville and Swansea police officers were dispatched to that area following reports of multiple gunshots. Upon arrival at the scene on Jamestown Road, they discovered a devastating situation. In the middle of the roadway, they found 18-year-old Shenandoah Burton of Millstadt, Illinois, deceased from a gunshot wound. Nearby, two other young women were inside a vehicle. One of those women had also been shot and was wounded.
Investigators quickly determined the shooting was domestic in nature. According to the Belleville Police Department, the suspect was the ex-boyfriend of one of the women in the car. Shenandoah Burton was a friend of the ex-girlfriend and was with her at the time of the attack. After the shooting on Jamestown Road, the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Ronald Long of Belleville, fled the scene in a vehicle.
A multi-jurisdictional pursuit ensued, with police from Illinois following the suspect west across the Mississippi River into St. Louis, Missouri. The chase continued into the city’s Downtown West neighborhood. There, near the intersection of 18th and Olive streets, the suspect’s vehicle crashed. As officers approached, they heard a single gunshot from inside the car. Ronald Long had taken his own life.
The wounded woman from the Jamestown Road shooting was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The third woman in the car was physically unharmed. The Belleville Police Department, with assistance from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, continues to investigate the full sequence of events.
