Sean Foley, 53, of Los Angeles, California, died on November 30, 2025, after a battle with brain cancer. His illness, diagnosed earlier that year, involved multiple surgeries and two craniotomies. Despite these challenges, he participated in the American Brain Tumor Association’s 50 Mile Challenge in May, writing that the cause was “close to my heart.”
Sean’s career in television spanned 25 years. He began with the premiere of Survivor in 2000, serving as supervising editor for the first eight seasons. He later became main title designer and director of photography through Season 31.
His work earned him five Emmy nominations for Outstanding Picture Editing in Non‑Fiction Programming between 2001 and 2005, and a sixth nomination for The Contender. By 2015, he joined Discovery’s Naked and Afraid franchise as executive producer and showrunner for XL and its spinoffs, filming across 27 countries.
A graduate of UCLA, Sean combined academic training with hands‑on mastery in visual effects, sound mixing, camera operation, and production. His career included contributions to CBS and Discovery, shaping the visual language of major unscripted television hits.
Family was central to Sean’s life. He is survived by his wife, Sondi, and their sons, Conner and Liam. He enjoyed coastal hikes, backyard barbecues, and evenings spent mentoring his children at their Hollywood Hills home.
Sean’s lifestyle reflected balance and creativity. He ran at Runyon Canyon, pursued photography, and maintained a vinyl collection of classic rock records. Travel from his global shoots became treasured memories shared with his family.
On December 10, 2025, Survivor Season 49 aired an on‑screen tribute reading, “In loving memory of Sean Foley, our friend and colleague.” As of December 12, 2025, funeral arrangements have not been publicly announced. Sean is remembered for his professional achievements and his generosity, leaving a lasting impact on both the television industry and his loved ones.
