It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of SGT. Robert Graham Shanks, age 75, of Peoria, who died peacefully at his home on January 1, 2026. His departure has left family, friends, and fellow veterans mourning the loss of a man whose life was defined by service, devotion, and love.
Born in Kewanee, Illinois, on June 29, 1950, to Leonard and Claire Shanks (née Doane), an early-developed sense of civic responsibility and national pride guided him into military service during the Vietnam War era. His commitment was demonstrated through enlistment in both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army, reflecting a profound dedication and adaptability.
His tenure in the armed forces was recognized with multiple commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, and Navy Unit Citation. These honors signify both his personal valor and his steadfast allegiance to his unit and country, aspects that continued to shape his identity long after his active duty concluded.
Subsequent to his military career, he was employed by Caterpillar Inc. for more than three decades before retiring. His vocational approach was marked by diligence and reliability. Personally, he valued participating in veterans’ reunions, maintaining connections with former comrades. Within his neighborhood, he became well-known for his extensive annual Halloween displays, a custom that generated widespread enjoyment and anticipation.
His family constituted his primary focus. He is survived by his sons, Michael Shanks (spouse Erin) of Peoria and Jonathan Shanks (spouse Mindy) of Texas; thirteen grandchildren: Amelia Shanks, Emma-liah Shanks, Ayrika Davis, Ciera Shanks, Jennifer Shanks, Kayla Rios (spouse Manuel), Megan Shanks, Josey Shanks, Layna Shanks, Kellie Shirey (spouse Eric), Samantha Collins, Jackson Fabia Jr., and Kamden Richie; and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Janice Hagen (spouse Jim), Cindy Quigley (spouse John), and Barb Gibbs (spouse Tim), along with a sister-in-law, Mary Shanks. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tom Shanks.
A period for public condolences is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Funeral rites will be conducted at the same location on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., preceded by a half-hour of additional visitation. Interment with complete military honors will follow at Swan Lake Memory Gardens, affording a final tribute commensurate with his lifetime of service.
While his mortal journey has concluded, the memory of Sergeant Robert Graham Shanks endures as that of an individual characterized by integrity, conviction, and affection. His influence persists through his descendants, his community, and the many individuals affected by his considerate and principled life, serving as a lasting reminder of the values he exemplified.
