A tragic collision in Avoca, Arkansas, has left the community grieving after two people were killed in a violent crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and Russell Road.

Investigators determined that the crash happened when a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, driven by 45‑year‑old Jose Gamez of Pea Ridge, attempted a left turn and entered directly into the path of an oncoming 1989 Harley‑Davidson motorcycle. The impact was immediate and catastrophic, sending debris across the roadway and leaving the motorcycle’s occupants critically injured. Authorities noted that weather conditions were clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the collision.

The victims were identified as 70‑year‑old Michael J. Cordes and 67‑year‑old Freda I. Cordes, a married couple from Rogers, Arkansas. They had been riding together on the motorcycle when the SUV crossed into their lane. Despite rapid medical attention from first responders, both were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of their injuries. No other injuries were reported among those involved in the crash.

Following the initial investigation, authorities arrested Jose Gamez, who now faces two counts of negligent homicide. A spokesperson for Arkansas State Police also confirmed that Gamez was charged with driving while intoxicated, adding another layer of gravity to the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials have not yet released further details about his condition or statements at the time of arrest.
