On December 27, 2025, Mary Jane “MJ” Bates, 78, passed away at Springfield, Illinois’ St. John’s Hospital. She was born in Herrin, Illinois, on May 5, 1947. Her parents were Don and Bertha (Barnes) Moake. Her family and friends, who remember her as a lady of warmth, generosity, and unshakeable loyalty to those she loved, are saddened by her passing.
In 1965, MJ received his diploma from Johnston City High School. She went on to have a lengthy and prosperous career at PBS, where she worked as an office manager for WMEC/WQEC/WSEC for almost 35 years until retiring. Her coworkers recall her as a dependable individual who not only achieved professional success but also created enduring connections by her kindness and energy.
Outside of her career, MJ enjoyed a wide range of interests that reflected her vibrant personality. She loved reading fiction, watching game shows and NFL football, traveling, baking, and cooking for her family. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and she delighted in collecting Santas, a tradition that brought joy to her home and those who visited. Above all, she cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and even her grandpups, who were a constant source of happiness.
She is survived by her children: Jeff Bates of Godfrey, IL; Jennifer (Scott) Rodgers of Carlinville, IL; and Doug (Katie) Bates of Chatham, IL. Her grandchildren include Mikayla Rodgers, Bailey Rodgers, and Savannah Kirchner. She is also survived by her brother Bill Moake of Carlinville, IL, sister-in-law Jan Bates, sister-in-law Evelyn Hutten, and several nieces and nephews. Her family now mourns the loss of a woman whose presence was a cornerstone of their lives.
MJ was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Larry Moake, and sisters-in-law Sue Moake and Betty Moake. Though she endured these losses, she remained a source of strength and love for her family, embodying resilience and grace throughout her life.
The visitation will take place at the Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville, Illinois, on Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. After that, loved ones will congregate at Reno’s Pizza for a Celebration of Life, where they will pay tribute to her, exchange tales, and consider the influence she had over her 78 years of life. Mary Jane Bates will be remembered for her kindness, her love for her family, and the happiness she offered to everyone who knew her as the community grieves.
