Martin J. Lonergan, widely recognized as Mike, aged 90, of South Jacksonville, Illinois, died in the morning hours of December 30, 2025, at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital. His lengthy and purposeful existence concluded, leaving a legacy valued by his relatives, companions, and the local community, who esteemed his amiable nature, wit, and steadfast loyalty.
A native of Morgan County, Illinois, born December 28, 1935, to the late Martin Joseph Lonergan and Marguerite Lonergan (née Steinmetz), he entered into marriage with Mary Ellen Cook on January 23, 1963. Their union spanned over six decades of mutual devotion and companionship. His spouse survives him, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who will perpetuate his memory.
His vocational life included a lengthy period as a managerial employee for the Wholesome Bread Company in Jacksonville prior to retirement. Former associates recall a conscientious and reliable professional dedicated to proper procedure. He also fulfilled a term of military duty with the United States Army during the Korean War period, stationed in Germany, where he exhibited the principles of regimentation and patriotic service.
In his personal time, he favored uncomplicated pastimes that aligned with his appreciation for social connection and domestic life. He was a regular patron at Bahans Tavern, engaging in fellowship, and found pleasure in the pursuits of horse racing and angling. Paramount to his contentment was the duration shared with his family, which constituted the foundational relationships of his experience.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Carolyn Jean DeFrates, and Patricia Megginson along with her husband, Jack. These adversities were met with a persistent resilience and affectionate constancy that fortified his remaining kin.
Funerary rites are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Interment with military acknowledgments will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, proximate to Jacksonville. A period for public visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 5, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with an additional hour of gathering preceding the Tuesday service.
