Martha Elizabeth Odom was a gifted and hardworking young woman whose talents touched nearly every corner of her school and community. She began dancing almost as soon as she could walk and went on to complete twelve years of classical ballet training before finishing high school.
The talented and radiant 17-year-old senior at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, Louisiana, was tragically killed on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Just weeks away from her 18th birthday and high school graduation, Martha was enjoying “senior skip day” with friends at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge when an altercation in the food court escalated into gunfire between two groups. A bullet struck her in the chest, and she was pronounced dead at the scene despite rapid emergency response.
Martha was a girl of many talents who poured her heart into every pursuit. She began dancing almost as soon as she could walk and completed 12 years of classical ballet training before graduating high school. A gifted writer, she earned short fiction awards in the Writes of Spring Regional Writing Contest for three consecutive years.
At Ascension Episcopal, she thrived academically and extracurricularly, appearing in five school musicals and three plays, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, playing varsity softball, soccer, and tennis, and participating in numerous clubs and honor societies. She had been accepted to the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where she planned to major in English & Creative Writing and Rhetoric while minoring in Dance.
On that afternoon in the Mall of Louisiana food court, Martha and several classmates became unintended victims when bullets flew. Six people were shot, most of them teens. Four were treated and are recovering, one remains in critical condition, and Martha tragically did not survive. A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged with murder, with police seeking at least one additional person of interest. The community continues to grieve this senseless loss amid heightened calls for safety and peace.
Her school community remembered her as a joyful presence whose kindness and enthusiasm brought light to all who knew her. The loss of such a talented, compassionate, and dedicated young woman has left her family, classmates, and teachers grieving deeply. Funeral services were scheduled for May 9 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Lafayette, with visitation the day before.
