A woman from Greenfield, California, Margarita Mares De Torres, died late Wednesday night after a violent single‑vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 10, just west of Red Cloud Mine Road, east of the community of Desert Center.
The crash occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on March 11, 2026, prompting a response from the California Highway Patrol and emergency medical personnel. Torres had been riding as a passenger in a 2011 Ford Ranger at the time of the collision.
According to investigators, the pickup truck was traveling eastbound on I‑10 when the 62‑year‑old male driver, also from Greenfield, drifted toward the dirt center median for reasons that remain unknown. The vehicle then overturned, rolling into the median before coming to rest on its left side. The force of the rollover caused Torres to be ejected from the vehicle, and she suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Coroner’s Bureau later confirmed Torres’ identity and pronounced her deceased. CHP officials noted that she had not been wearing a seatbelt, a factor that contributed significantly to the severity of her injuries. The driver, who was wearing his seatbelt, survived the crash and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with minor injuries.
The crash site, located along a remote stretch of Interstate 10 surrounded by open desert, required an extended response as authorities worked to secure the area and document the scene. Traffic in the eastbound lanes was slowed while investigators examined the vehicle’s final position, roadway conditions, and any potential mechanical issues that may have contributed to the rollover.
CHP has not released further information regarding what caused the driver to veer into the median.
