Louis Pelayo, 52, of Los Angeles, CA, dies in fatal vehicle-pedestrian collision

A tragic accident claimed the life of 52-year-old Louis Pelayo following a violent vehicle-pedestrian collision in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The fatal incident occurred at the well-known intersection of North Sepulveda Boulevard and Moraga Drive, a busy junction that has been the site of previous traffic fatalities, including the 2015 death of actress Rebecca Schaeffer.

Authorities reported that Louis Pelayo was struck by a motorist while at this intersection during daylight hours. The force of the impact caused critical injuries. First responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department rushed to the scene at North Sepulveda and Moraga to provide emergency medical aid.

Paramedics worked to stabilize Pelayo before transporting him by ambulance to a local hospital for advanced trauma care. Despite the rapid response and efforts of emergency room physicians and surgeons, the injuries were too severe. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Louis Pelayo was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 12:47 p.m. on January 21, 2026.

The official cause of death, as determined by the Medical Examiner, was multiple blunt traumatic injuries consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle. This formal finding classifies the manner of death as an accident.

As of the latest reports, the Los Angeles Police Department, which is leading the investigation, has not released any information about the driver involved. The driver’s identity, whether they remained at the scene, and any potential citations or charges are not yet part of the public record.

The LAPD’s investigation into the precise circumstances of the crash remains active. Detectives from the department’s West Traffic Division will examine all factors, including vehicle speed, pedestrian right-of-way, and potential driver distraction or impairment. The community awaits their findings, hoping for clarity and measures to improve safety at this historically dangerous intersection.
