A beloved presence in the hearts of many, Leonard Francis Hirner, age 56, of St. David, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. His death has brought sorrow to his family, friends, and colleagues, who remember him as a man defined by his strong work ethic, steady character, and love for the outdoors.
Born on September 5, 1969, in Peoria, Leonard was the son of Francis and Barbara (Kirkpatrick) Hirner. From an early age, he embraced the values of hard work and responsibility, qualities that carried through his life and career. He became a proud member of Local Union 231, where he spent many years laying concrete. Colleagues recall his dedication to his craft, his insistence on doing the job right, and his reputation for showing up and putting in the effort day after day.
Outside of work, Leonard found his greatest peace in nature. Whether spending time outdoors or simply enjoying quiet moments away from the demands of daily life, he carried with him a deep appreciation for the world around him. Friends and family often described him as someone who valued simplicity and found joy in the little things.
Leonard’s greatest pride, however, was his family. He is survived by his children: Elizabeth Matheny of Havana, IL; Hannah Hirner of Farmington, IL; and Michael (Jamie) Hirner of Monterey, IL. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, who will grow up hearing stories of his strength and kindness, and two brothers: Anthony Hirner of Peoria and Ralph Hirner of Elizabethtown, PA. His parents preceded him in death, but their legacy lived on through him.
Cremation rites have been accorded. The family will receive friends for a memorial visitation at Wright & Salmon Mortuary on Friday, January 9, 2025, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, giving loved ones the opportunity to gather, share memories, and honor the impact Leonard made during his 56 years.
As the community reflects on his passing, Leonard will be remembered not only for his craftsmanship and dedication but also for the love he gave to his family and the peace he found in the outdoors. His memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration, reminding all who knew him of the value of hard work, family, and simple joys.
