It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Donald E. Swanson, familiarly known as Swanny, who died on the evening of December 30, 2025, at the age of eighty-four. His death occurred at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, concluding a lifetime centered on familial devotion, religious conviction, and conscientious vocation.
A Galesburg native born January 30, 1941, to Nels and Marie Swanson (Johnson), his formative years included attendance at the Covenant Church. His spiritual life remained a foundational element, leading to his long-standing affiliation with Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria, where his participation spanned over five decades. His contributions there included serving as a steward and subsequently as a memorial secretary, roles that exemplified his dedication to his faith community.
Following duty with the Illinois Air National Guard, he established a notable thirty-two-year career as a federal bank examiner. Associates frequently noted his exceptional recall, particularly his facility with historical and personal dates, which served as a testament to his meticulous nature. His professional conduct was distinguished by scrupulous honesty, thoroughness, and a persistent pursuit of high standards.
He was wed to Rosemary Coates, and their union was the cornerstone of a family that brought him profound fulfillment. He is survived by his spouse, his four children, and ten grandchildren: David Swanson (spouse Kelly) and their children Collin, Annie, and Drew; Michael Swanson (spouse Jennifer) and their children Kylie and Alex; Marci Linne (spouse Brian) and their children Emily Potts (spouse Carson), Luke, and Sara; Adam Coates (spouse Mandy) and their children Ora and Adel. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Rittenhouse, as well as three nieces and a nephew. His parents preceded him in death.
A period for public condolences is arranged for Sunday, January 4, 2026, from two until five o’clock in the afternoon at Salem Lutheran Church. A further gathering will occur one hour preceding the memorial service on Monday, January 5, 2026, at eleven o’clock in the morning at the same location, to be conducted by Pastor Craig Swenson. The interment of his remains at Resurrection Cemetery will be conducted privately at a subsequent time.
In remembrance, his legacy within the Peoria community is defined by more than his occupational and ecclesiastical contributions. It is equally rooted in his personal generosity, steadfast commitment to his relatives, and the enduring positive influence he imparted to acquaintances and loved ones. The remembrance of his principled life, his affectionate presence, and his steadfast faith will persist in the recollections of those who knew him.
