It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Steven Malley. The 78 year old beloved resident of Bristol, Connecticut passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, sharp wit, and unwavering kindness that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Born on September 12, 1947 in Bristol to the late Charles Malley and Mae (Grivois) Malley, John lived a life rooted in the city he loved, spending time in New Britain and Meriden before returning home for his final years. His gentle departure has created a profound void for his family and friends, yet it has also drawn the Bristol community closer as they reflect on a man whose caring nature and joyful humor brightened every room he entered.
John attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School and was a 1965 graduate of Bristol Central High School. A bright child and first-generation college student, he went on to graduate from UCONN as an English major, displaying above all a caring nature, quick wit, and joyful sense of humor that defined him throughout his life.
He was patient and kind, someone who listened deeply and offered encouragement exactly when it was needed, turning everyday interactions into moments of genuine connection that friends and family still speak of with warmth and gratitude. In Bristol, where he built his world, John became the kind of person others naturally turned to for a thoughtful word or a shared laugh, creating bonds that felt both strong and lasting.
He is survived by his daughter Rachel Malley, son Justin Malley and daughter-in-law Tabetha Malley, and the mother of his children, Linda Malley; grandchildren Raina Lambert, Quinn Malley, and Reid Malley; stepchildren Amanda Hilliker, Ian Hilliker, and Kiel Hilliker, and their mother Lisa Keith.
John poured his heart into family life, cherishing the roles of father and grandfather with the same steady devotion he brought to everything he did. His loved ones remember how he made each gathering feel special, whether through a well-timed joke or the quiet support he offered without hesitation, leaving behind memories that will continue to guide and comfort them in the days ahead.
The funeral ceremony will begin at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. at O’Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Bristol. The burial will take place at a later time that works for the family. These get-togethers provide family and friends with a special place to unite, tell tales of John’s kindness and humor, and start the healing process while paying tribute to the man who was so important to so many.
