We are utterly heartbroken to inform you of the passing of Joe Villarreal, age 79, of Laredo, Texas, who died peacefully on May 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, educator, and public servant, Joe lived a life defined by hard work, integrity, and deep commitment to his community and loved ones.
Joe met the love of his life, Margarita Gonzalez, and they married on June 10, 1972. Their partnership, built on mutual respect and shared values, became the foundation of a beautiful family life that spanned more than five decades. Together they supported one another through every chapter, creating a home filled with love, faith, and purpose.
Both Joe and Margarita worked as educators with the United Independent School District. He served as a physical education teacher at Nye Elementary and Clark Elementary, where he inspired young students through sports, discipline, and encouragement. His energetic presence and genuine care for children left a lasting positive impact on countless students during his teaching years.
Later in his career, Joe joined U.S. Customs, where he excelled and steadily advanced through the ranks to become a GS-14 Watch Commander. After thirty years of dedicated federal service, he retired with honor, known for his professionalism, leadership, and strong work ethic. His contributions helped strengthen border operations and public safety in the region.
On Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., the Villarreal family will have visitors at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services. At 11:00 a.m., a rosary will start, providing a chance for friends and family to come together, exchange memories, and provide consolation at this time of grief.
Joe Villarreal will be remembered as a loving family man, dedicated educator, respected public servant, and faithful husband whose warmth, humor, and strong values touched everyone around him. Though he is gone, the legacy of love, service, and integrity he built will continue to live on through his family and all whose lives he enriched.
