A shooting occurred Thursday night in a remote part of Troup County, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized. On February 5, 2026, at around 7:49 p.m., the Troup County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a gunshot at a house on Big Springs Mountville Road. The coroner subsequently verified the precise address as a residence at 609 Big Springs Mountville Road.
Upon arrival at the home, deputies discovered two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds. They immediately began life-saving measures, providing medical assistance until fire and EMS crews arrived to take over. The deputies’ quick response and first aid were critical in the initial moments of the emergency.
The Troup County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased victim as 54-year-old Jeffery Scott, a resident of Troup County. He was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. The second victim was identified as 50-year-old Walter Keene. Keene was transported from the scene to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Investigators identified the shooter as 32-year-old Zachary Thompkins. He had fled after the incident but was located at an address on nearby Greenville Road. Deputies took him into custody without resistance shortly after the shooting.
