A 38-year-old Hoover man with a documented history of mental illness and a prior conviction for fatally shooting a family dog faces formal attempted murder charges following a chaotic Sunday morning shootout that left his father dead and a police officer wounded.
Court records identify the suspect as Asa Redd Griggs. Authorities expect to charge him with murder in the death of his father, 71-year-old Glenn Adrian Griggs, pending final autopsy results.
The Hoover Police Department responded at 7:49 a.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2026, to a residence in the 2000 block of River Lake Drive in the Southlake Estates neighborhood, near the intersection of Valleydale Road and Southlake Parkway. The call was for a report of a mentally disturbed person. Chief Clay Morris stated that upon officers’ arrival, Griggs immediately produced a Glock 19 handgun, pointed it at a nearby family member, and opened fire.
Glenn Adrian Griggs was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. A Hoover police officer was also shot in the torso during the exchange and transported to UAB Hospital in stable condition. Mayor Nick Derzis confirmed he met with the wounded officer and his wife; the officer was released from the hospital on Monday, February 9, and is expected to recover fully. Officers returned fire, striking Asa Griggs, who was hospitalized in stable condition before being booked into the Shelby County Jail on Tuesday, February 10.
Asa Griggs faces two counts of attempted murder for shooting one officer in the torso and firing upon a second officer. He is being held on bonds totaling $120,000. Formal murder charges in the death of his father are anticipated once the final autopsy report is received.
Court records further reveal that Griggs was actively serving a 24-month probationary sentence from an April 2025 conviction for animal cruelty, in which he pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a family dog while it was confined in a crate. The state has now moved to revoke his probation. His criminal history also includes prior arrests for domestic violence and arson, though those charges were ultimately dismissed.
Because Hoover police officers discharged their weapons, the investigation has been transferred to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation, standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. Chief Morris has stated the department is grateful for the outpouring of community support and has requested continued prayers for all those affected by the devastating incident.
