Gayle D. Ford, a 76 year old feisty resident of Billings Montana, passed away unexpectedly on November 19 2025 surrounded by loved ones in her cozy family home.
Born April 8 1949 in rural Roundup to ranchers Harold and Dorothy Swanson, she embodied Big Sky independence from her youth spent riding horses across golden prairies. Her sudden departure from natural causes leaves a heartfelt void in the community that cherished her unyielding spirit and sharp wit.
Gayles professional life spanned three decades as a paralegal at a Billings law firm specializing in family estates where her meticulous organization streamlined countless cases. After earning a business certificate from Billings Vo Tech in 1975 she balanced career demands with volunteer shifts at the local senior center teaching quilting classes that wove stories of Montana history.
As a devoted mother to sons Travis Michael and Ryan Dale she instilled compassion through hands on guidance from scouting trips in the Beartooths to baking elk meat pies for holiday feasts. Widowed since 2010 after 45 years with husband Dale a retired oil field mechanic Gayle doted on her seven grandchildren organizing annual camping retreats at Red Lodge where laughter echoed her values of grit and grace.
Gayles lifestyle reflected simple joys rooted in Montanas rhythms with daily walks along the Yellowstone River nurturing her hobby of wildflower photography captured in albums gifted to kin. An avid reader of Western novels she hosted book clubs at her book lined den fostering bonds over coffee and critiques of frontier heroines. Her faith as a member of First Presbyterian Church guided quiet acts like delivering meals to shut ins embodying her belief in neighbors as extended kin.

A memorial service for Gayle is scheduled for December 15 2025 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Billings with visitation from noon handled by Dahl Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Montana Senior Center Network honoring her community service. Burial will follow privately at Sunset Memorial Gardens where her spirit joins the endless Montana sky.
