Gail A. Klingensmith, born June 13, 1954, passed away on May 12, 2026, at the age of 71 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her death from cancer has created a significant void in the Pittsburgh community and the restaurant world she helped shape for nearly five decades.
Gail co-founded P&G Pamela’s Diner with Pam Cohen in 1980, helping transform it into one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic breakfast institutions. What began as a single location grew into a beloved chain known for its famous hotcakes and welcoming atmosphere. She served as the heart and soul of the business, creating a place where customers felt like family and where community connections thrived for generations.
Before dedicating herself fully to the diner, Gail worked as a Reading Specialist in several school districts. She touched the lives of many young children through her teaching and later extended that same caring spirit to employees, vendors, customers, and friends. Her motto, “You pass this way but once, whatever good you can do, Do It Now,” guided her interactions and defined her generous approach to life.
Known for her infectious laugh, kindness, and abundant generosity, Gail had a remarkable ability to make instant friends with nearly everyone she met. An avid sports fan, she loyally supported the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and especially the Pirates. She also enjoyed golf and brought the same enthusiasm and positivity to her hobbies as she did to her work and relationships.
Gail is survived by her spouse of 32 years, Kathryn Chatfield, her sister Mary Jane Rowe, nephews, a niece, great-nieces and nephews, step-sons, and step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother. Her extended restaurant family and countless customers also mourn the loss of someone who made Pamela’s Diner far more than just a restaurant.
