A tragic incident claimed the life of Ethan Locklear, a 22-year-old junior dragster racer from Lumberton, North Carolina, on Friday, January 16, 2026. The fatal accident occurred at Fayetteville Motorsports Park, a drag racing facility located off Chicken Foot Road in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
The crash transpired shortly after 10:30 p.m. as Locklear was operating his dragster during the latter stages of the “Midnight Madness” racing event. According to eyewitnesses and track officials, he was in the process of making his return run down the drag strip after successfully completing a pass. Instead of exiting the track as normal, Locklear’s vehicle made a U-turn and began accelerating in the wrong direction, back down the active racing lane.
Tragically, another dragster, driven by a different competitor, was at that moment on a full-speed run down the same lane. The two high-powered vehicles collided head-on at an extremely high rate of speed. The force of the impact was catastrophic.
Emergency medical personnel stationed at the track rushed to the scene. Despite their immediate life-saving efforts, Ethan Locklear was pronounced dead at the racetrack. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
