Doris June and Vander Huffman Death, Kentucky elderly couple died in Hardyville fatal shooting

An elderly married couple lost their lives in a sad occurrence that occurred on Wednesday morning, January 15, 2026, in a peaceful neighborhood in Hardyville, Metcalfe County, Kentucky.

When Kentucky State Police troopers from Post 15 arrived at a private residence at around 9:35 a.m. in response to allegations of a shooting on Shady Grove Whickerville Road, the scene instantly revealed a serious domestic crisis.

Upon entering the residence, authorities discovered 83-year-old Doris June Huffman deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. The Metcalfe County coroner arrived promptly to the scene and officially pronounced her dead, confirming the cause aligned with the visible trauma observed by responding troopers.

The discovery highlighted the sudden and irreversible nature of the event, transforming a peaceful morning in the small community into one marked by emergency vehicles and investigative activity as neighbors learned of the unfolding tragedy through word of mouth and official channels.

Simultaneously, troopers located Doris’s husband, 87-year-old Vander Huffman, inside the same residence suffering from life-threatening injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel provided initial stabilization before arranging swift transport to T.J. Samson Community Hospital in nearby Glasgow for advanced care. Despite medical interventions aimed at addressing the severe trauma, Vander succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon, with the Barren County coroner formally pronouncing his death at the facility.

The coordinated response involved multiple agencies, including the Metcalfe County Sheriff’s Office, Barren/Metcalfe County EMS, and coroners from both counties, reflecting the jurisdictional aspects of rural emergency handling in Kentucky. Troopers secured the property to preserve evidence while ensuring the dignified removal of the victims, a process carried out with sensitivity given the couple’s long-standing presence in the Hardyville area.

Kentucky State Police continue their active death investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shootings, treating the case as an apparent murder-suicide based on preliminary findings. Detectives are examining the sequence of events within the home, potential contributing factors, and any relevant history, though no motive has been publicly disclosed at this early stage.
