Death | Mitchell Folsom, 50-year-old man from Tulsa killed by officer during confrontation

The north Tulsa community is processing the tragic and chaotic events of Tuesday morning, May 12, 2026, that resulted in the death of 50-year-old Mitchell Folsom. What began as a domestic confrontation inside a moving vehicle quickly escalated into a multi-vehicle crash and ended in an officer-involved shooting.

Folsom, a resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma, became the central figure in a rapid series of violent incidents that unfolded in a residential neighborhood and affected the safety of nearby schoolchildren.

Tulsa Police officers were first dispatched around 7:22 a.m. to the area of 36th Street North and North Hartford Avenue following reports of an injury collision involving multiple vehicles. Investigators later determined that Folsom had been in a heated argument with his girlfriend while she drove a Nissan Frontier pickup truck.

During the dispute, Folsom allegedly produced a handgun and fired at her, causing the driver to lose control. The truck veered off the road, struck another vehicle, and resulted in a rollover.

Folsom fled the crash scene on foot and ran toward a wooded area and pond near Walt Whitman Elementary School, prompting the school to go into secure lockdown for the safety of students and staff. Officers located him partially submerged in the pond. When he emerged and made a threatening movement toward officers, one fired, striking Folsom. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver sustained injuries but survived the initial shooting and crash.

This sequence of events, beginning inside the vehicle and culminating near Flat Rock Creek, left the north Tulsa neighborhood shaken. Folsom reportedly made comments about not wanting to return to prison while fleeing. No officers, students, or additional bystanders were injured during the confrontation. The involved officer has been placed on routine administrative leave pending a full investigation by the Tulsa Police Department’s internal affairs and the District Attorney’s office.

Family members and those who knew Mitchell Folsom are now left to mourn amid the difficult circumstances surrounding his death. The incident has renewed conversations in the community about domestic violence, mental health, and the challenges law enforcement faces in rapidly evolving, high-risk situations. Tulsa Police continue to urge anyone with additional information or video from the area to come forward.

As the official investigation proceeds, authorities emphasize that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The Tulsa Police Department has expressed condolences to all affected parties while working to provide clarity and transparency through body-worn camera footage once it is cleared for release. This complex case highlights how quickly a domestic dispute can spiral into tragedy on city streets.
