Alfredo Orozco, 18, of Covina, and Maricela Orozco, 51, of Pacoima, were among three people killed in a head‑on collision on Highway 18 in Pinon Hills on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The crash occurred east of Blanco Road at approximately 7:50 p.m. when a Jeep Wrangler crossed into the eastbound lane and struck their Honda Odyssey minivan.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the Honda Odyssey was traveling eastbound when the Jeep veered into its path, causing a violent collision. The driver of the minivan, identified as 58‑year‑old Javier Hernandez Ramirez of Pacoima, was killed alongside passengers Alfredo and Maricela Orozco. All three victims were trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency crews from the San Bernardino County Fire Department and CHP responded quickly, finding the Honda Odyssey blocking eastbound lanes and the Jeep Wrangler on the south shoulder of the roadway. Three additional passengers from the Honda survived but sustained serious injuries.
Two were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition, while another was transported by ground ambulance. The Jeep’s driver also suffered major injuries and was taken to St. Mary Medical Center.
Authorities confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not suspected factors in the crash. Investigators are still reviewing the circumstances, including whether speed or driver error contributed. Highway 18 was closed in both directions for several hours as crews worked to extricate victims, recover the deceased, and clear debris. The roadway reopened around 5 a.m. Sunday.
The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office formally identified the victims as Javier Hernandez Ramirez, Maricela Orozco, and Alfredo Orozco. Maricela was remembered as a longtime resident of Pacoima, while Alfredo was a young man from Covina whose life ended far too soon. Their deaths have left family and community members grieving deeply.
The tragedy underscores the dangers of rural highways like SR‑18, where narrow lanes and high speeds often contribute to fatal collisions.
