The visionary founder and president of JusticeWorksYouthCare, a nationally respected leader in behavioral health and youth services, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2026, with loved ones by his side after an extremely hard-fought and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 78.
His departure has left a profound void in Pittsburgh and far beyond, as colleagues, the families he served, and friends reflect on a man whose life was defined by purpose, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to helping vulnerable youth and their families find stability and hope.
Born in Ellenville, New York, on September 28, 1947, to Rose (Green) and Morris Heit, Dan was raised with a strong sense of duty and empathy that would influence every phase of his life. He was recognized for creating successful programs for at-risk adolescents while working as a senior executive at Abraxas early in his career.
That experience became the foundation for something even greater when, in 1999, he founded JusticeWorksYouthCare in Pittsburgh. What began as a small organization quickly grew into a nationally recognized model for innovative, community-based behavioral health services that transformed the way troubled youth and families received support.
Dan’s mission was to give young lives that others had frequently cast off hope and dignity, not simply policies or programs.
