A tragic incident claimed the life of 25-year-old Caitlin Stup, an innocent bystander who was shot and killed during a violent exchange of gunfire on a Houston METRO bus on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
The shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. on bus No. 2611, which was traveling on Route 161 near the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Walnut Bend in west Houston. According to investigators, two male suspects—identified as 17-year-old Brayden Smith and 18-year-old Patrick Scott—were arguing on the bus when Smith allegedly fired the first shot.
Instead of striking the intended target, the bullet fatally struck Caitlin Stup in the head. In the ensuing crossfire, a 16-year-old male passenger was also shot and wounded in the leg. The bus driver immediately stopped the vehicle and safely offloaded all passengers, after which both suspects fled the scene on foot.
Caitlin Stup, who was on her way to her job at a Sweetgreen restaurant in Uptown Houston, was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. The wounded 16-year-old victim sought treatment at a hospital on his own and was released the following morning.
Following a more than 24-hour manhunt, Houston police arrested the two suspects on Thursday, January 8. Investigators credited the public and school resource officers with helping to identify the suspects after police released surveillance photos captured by the bus’s cameras. Brayden Smith has been charged with murder for allegedly firing the fatal shot. Patrick Scott, who was out on bond for an unrelated aggravated robbery charge at the time of the shooting, has been charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon for allegedly returning fire during the incident.
METRO officials stated they were “deeply saddened” by the “tragic and senseless act of violence”. The agency confirmed that surveillance footage from the bus has been turned over to law enforcement to assist the ongoing homicide investigation, which is being led by the Houston Police Department.
This tragic event has left the community shaken, with nearby residents describing a scene of heavy police presence, helicopters, and canine units searching the area.
