In a tragic shooting on December 6, 2025, Brittany Nicole Kavanaugh, age 29, was killed in a drive-by attack on the south side of Indianapolis. The violence occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. in the 200 block of East Troy Avenue, close to South Meridian Street, highlighting a persistent pattern of personal disputes turning lethal within the city.
Police arrived quickly after receiving calls about gunshots and found Brittany with multiple gunshot wounds inside the hallway of an apartment building. Her car, in which she had been sitting, was the apparent target.
She was taken to Eskenazi Hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arrival. The cause of death was determined to be several gunshot wounds to her chest and head. According to the investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the shooting arose from a domestic conflict.
The alleged attacker, reported to be Brittany’s former boyfriend, is said to have fired from her own vehicle before driving away. The suspect was found hours later in a neighboring county. While no arrests had been confirmed as of December 11, forensic examination of the recovered black sedan indicates the assault was deliberate.
Brittany was born in Indianapolis in 1996 to Mark and Lisa Kavanaugh. She was raised in the Beech Grove area, attended local schools, and earned an associate degree in business administration from Ivy Tech Community College in 2017.
She applied her administrative talents to a career at Imma Rapper, a local music promotion company, where she advanced to the role of administrative coordinator. In that position, she handled event coordination and artist services with consistent dedication. Coworkers describe her as the energetic center of the office, combining effectiveness with a genuine passion for supporting new musicians.
Her family was a vital part of her life. She was close to her younger brother Tyler, an auto mechanic, and her parents, who emphasized perseverance and helping others during regular Sunday family meals. Though not married, she was a loving aunt to her niece Emma, frequently organizing creative projects to nurture the child’s imagination. She had been in a long-term relationship that ended unhappily several months before her death.
Brittany balanced professional ambition with a lively personal routine. She practiced yoga regularly at neighborhood studios and enjoyed evenings exploring independent hip-hop performances in the downtown area. Her interests included assembling themed music playlists for car journeys and volunteering at animal shelters, where she provided temporary care for dogs awaiting adoption. Her empathetic and adventurous nature attracted a wide circle of friends.
As Indianapolis mourns this loss—the city’s 142nd homicide of 2025—Brittany’s generous spirit is being remembered. A memorial is planned for December 13 at Flanner Buchanan Funeral Home.
