Billy Joe Williams, 48, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was fatally shot during an officer-involved incident on Saturday, May 2, 2026. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Chattanooga Police Department, officers responded around 9:40 p.m. to a reported disturbance and possible hostage situation in the 2200 block of East 27th Street Court at the East Lake Courts apartment complex.
The caller reported an armed man on the second floor claiming to hold a hostage. Upon arrival, officers observed Williams wielding a gun from a second-story window. After giving multiple verbal commands for him to exit the residence, which he did not obey, one officer discharged his weapon, striking Williams.
Williams was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No law enforcement officers were injured. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is independently investigating the circumstances at the request of 11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp.
