A heartbreaking tragedy struck the Ottumwa community when a recent high school graduate lost her life in a traffic collision just hours after celebrating one of the proudest moments of her young life.
Ashlin Jade Knuth, 18, of Ottumwa, Iowa, died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Sunday evening, May 17, 2026. She had walked across the stage earlier that day as part of the Ottumwa High School Class of 2026.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:19 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and Roemer Avenue in Ottumwa. Knuth was driving a 2005 Mini Cooper westbound on Roemer Avenue when her vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a northbound 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup truck. The impact caused significant damage, particularly to the driver’s side of the Mini Cooper.
Emergency crews from the Ottumwa Fire Department and ORMICS responded to the scene and worked to extricate Knuth and her 18-year-old male passenger from the vehicle. Both were transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Knuth succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m. at the hospital.
The driver of the Dodge Dakota, identified as 21-year-old Nathaniel Hart of Ottumwa, was not injured in the collision. Ottumwa Police Department investigators continue to examine the circumstances of the crash, including any contributing factors at the intersection. No charges have been announced at this time.
The Ottumwa Community School District released a statement expressing profound sadness over the loss of Ashlin Knuth. Superintendent Michael McGrory and High School Principal Shelley Bramschreiber noted the deep impact on the school community and offered support resources to students and families. Ashlin was remembered fondly as an animal lover who enjoyed working with children.
