A tense hostage situation in a rural South Carolina community concluded tragically when the suspect was found dead in an underground bunker. Anthony Lee Safrit, a resident of Wedgefield in Sumter County, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Monday, May 18, 2026.
The incident began when authorities responded to reports that Safrit was holding two people against their will at a residence, prompting a major law enforcement response involving the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Special Emergency Response Team and U.S. Marshals.
The event unfolded around 12:18 p.m. on Sally Street in the Wedgefield area of Sumter County, South Carolina. A relative of one of the hostages contacted police after receiving a call indicating they were being held by Safrit, who reportedly had open warrants and made threats. The two hostages, a woman and an older man, managed to escape the home safely as deputies arrived. Safrit then barricaded himself in a bunker-like structure located beneath the garage at the back of the property.
