It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Terry Williams. The much-loved long-time historian and author for the Newtown Jets passed away on February 25, 2026 at the age of 62, just hours after he had proudly hosted the club’s 2026 season launch event. A true Newtown Jet through and through, Terry dedicated decades of his life to preserving and sharing the rich history of the club and the wider game of rugby league.
Terry was born in Marrickville in 1963. Warren Williams, a former lower-grade player from Newtown, was his father. He and his six siblings grew up in Ashcroft, where he was influenced early on by his passion for sports history and his cherished Bluebags. Beginning in the early 1990s, this certified teacher turned his love of rugby league and storytelling into in-depth historical study.
Over the years, Terry became the definitive historian for the Newtown Rugby League Football Club. He authored two landmark books on the club, “Out of the Blue” in 1993 and “Through Blue Eyes” in 2008. He also served as historian at the NRL Museum for several years, where he worked tirelessly to bring the game’s past to life for new generations.
A devoted family man, Terry is survived by his wife Denise, their daughter, two sons, and two grandchildren. His family was central to his life, and he balanced his deep commitment to rugby league history with being a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
The news of his sudden passing has deeply affected the Newtown Jets family, the NSWRL, and the entire rugby league community. Tributes have poured in praising Terry not only for his vast knowledge but for his generosity, kindness, and willingness to share his expertise freely with anyone who shared his love for the game.
Terry Williams will be remembered as one of the most passionate and knowledgeable guardians of Newtown Jets history. His contributions will continue to educate and inspire for many years to come.
